Roshan's Blog: "Do they know if it's a Boy or Girl?"

This has become a frequent question asked by friends and family since announcing we are going to be grandparents this fall. According to the ultrasound we are expecting a “granddaughter” and we are just as excited as if this baby were to be a “grandson”.

Today’s couples have the option of knowing the sex of the baby before the birth through an ultrasound in their second trimester and onwards. As my son pointed out “It’s a surprise now or a surprise later”, so they decided to enjoy their surprise early. A surprise it was, as they were certain they were having a boy –I’m not sure why, but that is what they felt.

Of course, in the past we did not have the option of finding out the sex ahead of time. This meant one less decision to make during the pregnancy aside from what classes to take, equipment to buy and name to choose. As for the latter, having another name in mind is always wise should this baby appear in the blue color range of baby items rather than the pink.

As a childbirth educator, I am familiar with the possibility of having a girl when expecting a boy and vice versa. There have been numerous reports over the years of my couples giving birth to the opposite sex than what they were expecting.

I have attended many births over the years and with the element of surprise remaining at the actual birth, “seeing is believing” when finally all present joyously announce “It’s a   -----!”
