Roshan's Blog: Sore Nipples
10/14/09
Just the horror of these words makes any woman cringe and wonder why anyone would want to breastfeed. However, breastfeeding does not mean that you will or have to suffer with sore nipples. Yes, I can remember the initial tenderness and this is to be expected. Tenderness is normal and felt for a couple of weeks or less while your nipples adjust to the baby’s suckling and then nursing becomes more pleasurable.
However, any time “pain” is felt enough to draw tears or hunched shoulders from a new mom, immediate attention within the first few days needs to be taken. This cannot be stressed enough. An experienced lactation consultant will help you and your baby learn the correct way to breastfeed. Usually sore nipples are a result of the baby’s poor latch on and with guidance and learning for both mother and baby this can be so easily corrected to avoid nipple trauma. Using a nipple cream full of healing oils and butters to help soothe any soreness and cracking will work wonders as well.
So don’t wait; if you are experiencing any discomfort from breastfeeding, seek out a lactation specialist or breast feeding support clinic and you and your baby will be happy you did.
