Roshan's Blog: Choosing Baby Equipment

My children are in their 30s so I have not been in a baby store for a long time, though I do frequently browse the many magazines that are available for expectant parents. What confusion and heavy marketing- it makes anybody setting up a nursery worry about their bank account and where to store all this baby stuff!
However, if you really stop and think, what do new babies really need for the first few weeks and months? Very little. They don’t do much except eat, poop and sleep. Their food hopefully will come from those warm, fast food containers called breasts, they can sleep in a small bassinette for at least the first 3 months, and diapers will take care of the rest.
Now I do agree that one of those battery powered swings can save many foot miles of walking and rocking for sleep deprived parents. This will give anyone some rest for at least 20 minutes or an hour should you be so lucky. As for the music that goes along with the swing, those tunes will be forever ingrained in your brain and lull you to sleep along with the baby. Whatever works for a few moments of peace and quiet is essential for anyone’s sanity.
Depending on finances, being resourceful can save $$$, and spreading out the purchases that is appropriate to the baby’s age and needs over the months and years can prevent any parent from feeling completely overwhelmed.
