Roshan's Blog: Fish Oil-Not so awful tasting

2/12/10

I can still taste the liquid cod liver oil that I had to take throughout my childhood. Ugh! I remember it was given to me in a shot glass with a dash of orange juice to help it go down and was always followed by a terrible fishy aftertaste.

Today, fish oil is in the news due to its high content of omega-3 DHA which is beneficial for the whole family for heart, vision and brain health and well being. Apparently, there is also increased benefit of taking fish oil during pregnancy for a growing fetus to support its neurological and brain development.  This benefit continues after birth if a lactating mother continues to take fish oil during the nursing period.

I was hesitant to start taking fish oil again as an adult, but now it comes in capsule form and is enteric coated. This means I do not get the fishy aftertaste since the capsule does not break down until it is in the intestines.

I believe I owe much of my good health at this age to the fact that I took fish oil for so many years when I was younger.  Now, I take it daily to remain healthy and with hopes that it will help keep my memory and eyesight sharp as I approach my twilight years.
